The Grand Columbian 1/2 IM 9/13/08

What a great weekend! Rob, Tweety, Laura, Chris, and I drove over to Grand Coulee Friday afternoon before the race. After picking up our registration packets we proceeded to the start line to rack our bikes. After that was complete it was off to Lake Roosevelt and our house boat. Tweety cooked up a fantastic pasta dinner we scarfed down before bed. I don't think anyone slept to well because of the high winds that kept the boat rockin all night.

The race itself went pretty well. After hearing how difficult the bike course was I set my goal at 6:15. The swim went much better then expected, 38:00, the bike was great 2:57, and I totally fell apart on the run, 2:26, for a total of 6:08. I really thought I had 6:00hrs in the bag till the last few miles of the run. And speaking of the run... It was hot! Around 85 degrees.

I stayed well hydrated but still suffered from cramps the last few miles of the run, I will need to get that figured out.

Grinding it out.

Got in 6 mile run on Wednesday and 25 miles on the bike last night. I mixed up our run start time this morning so I was solo for 11 miles at Discovery park. I didn't feel to bad but my right foot feels pretty tight right now.

I'm weak

Nothing to exciting to report. I bailed on Running the Eugene marathon last week, my top excuses were the long drive and $140 late registration fee. I did get out for a 10+ mile run Saturday morning and got 8.5 miles in yesterday. Anessa and I had a big week of Softball, we won all 4 games played. Been golfing a couple days a week!

Just the facts

5.6 mile run at lunch. Felt great, no watch but I was cooking the last couple miles. 90 minute pool work out after work. Got some great pointers and ran drills. After swimming... Softball double header. Played ok, ripped my leg up a bit sliding and I got drilled in the back sliding into 3rd.

Tired now :-)

First day of Cheryl's training program!

Got a 4 mile run in before work this morning. I must be taking this thing seriously to get up that early! It was a beautiful morning running along the canal as the sun came up. I also spent 1.25 hours in the gym tonight. 30 minutes on the stair climber (intense) and 45 minutes of lifting with some stretching and core mixed in.

I will get my swim in tomorrow Cheryl!

Skiing or Golf?

Getting some extra shut eye made the decision for me. Waited till 2:30pm to tee off and managed to avoid the snow and all the other weather craziness. shot an 89 at Jefferson (41 on the back) and got some exercise walking the course.

Did some lifting and stretching today at the gym. Tomorrow starts the new training program!

Spring Snow

I thought I would be running solo in the crappy weather today but Matt showed up at the Discovery Park parking lot this morning. We did 8 miles at a little over a 8 minute pace. The weather didn't turn out to bad but it did snow a couple times on us!

I felt pretty good but my right ankle is a little swollen and my legs didn't have a lot of spark. I guess it's only been 6 days since the marathon.

Been a while!

Ok, take 2 on this thing. I got a new pair of Brooks running shoes in February and ever since my Ipod/Nike thing stopped working. On top of that the links into this blog of the run statistics also stopped working so I lost interest.

Anyway, lots of updates from the last 10 weeks!

First off I finished the Whidbey Island Marathon Sunday in 4:05:27, not to shabby but I was hoping it would be faster.

- The first 13 miles went as planned in 1:47 despite some serious hills.
- The next 4 were fine.
- At 17 miles Laura's friend Ernie met us with salted baby potatoes, they were great!
- 19 miles in I tried to use the bathroom w/o success.
- Mile 20 was rough, my quads started cramping
- The last 6 miles was a a combination of running on the flats and downhill and walking the hills.

In recap I am going to try Cytomax, banana's and some more pre-race protein to fight off the cramps. I am planning on running the Eugene marathon on May 4th.

I was able to run 4.5 miles yesterday at an 8 minute pace so I take that as a good sign after only 3 rest days.

My new bike! Felt B12

It was a long silly story trying to get this thing but I love it. Anyone who beats me on the bike this year is simply better than me and not on better equipment.

My first ride on the bad boy was a 45 miler in a March snow storm!

I will be updating this regularly to keep anyone interested up to date on my training and races. On the right pane I have a training schedule and log so check it out from time to time.

Stupid Dodgeball!

I managed to log 4 miles yesterday before dodgeball. That all went fine. Dodgeball was a different story. The opening play I pulled "something" my butt! So, no hills tonight but hopefully with some stretching and Advil I will be ok for Saturday's run.

Back on the bike!

I didn't get a chance to hit the gym today so I broke out the ole 1990 Trek 330. She's been been sitting dormant since last Fall until today. Nothing really to speak of other than a brisk 14/ish mile ride a little North of Matthews Beach. It was a chilly night and the flat tire at the end of the ride didn't help. Felt good to ride again, I am really looking forward to Triathlon season!

Wind but no wet

I expected some nasty weather for my run this afternoon but for the most part I lucked out. The wind was blowing pretty good but the rain held off. I was surprised how good I felt after 15 miles on Saturday and having a little "to good of time" watching the superbowl yesterday. My game plan was 8 miles around a 8:15 pace or so. It felt like I was taking it pretty easy for the first mile (7:53) and after that I picked it up a bit. I will lift tomorrow and go another 6-8 miles Wednesday.
Today's run

(almost) 15 miles of fun!

Now that I am out of the bath tub I can get moving on the rest of my day. This morning started with a 14.67 mile run with Laura and John. Our goal was 15 so we were in the ball park. We started with 2 laps around Discovery park before leaving the park and doing a 5 mile loop on the bluff and then finished the whole thing off with another lap around the park.

I was in far from top form today (Dodgeball!) but overall I felt great.

Running

So here goes Blog #1 (at least on this site).

I am going to try this blog out and use it as a record for the training I have been doing lately. You might have to sift through a little bit of boring family and climbing stuff too however :-)

I have several fitness goals in 2008. They include running my first marathon in 11 years (2nd ever), trying my first 1/2 Ironman distance triathlon, climbing Mt Olympus in a single day (46 miles), Improving my times in the Leavenworth and Seattle 1/2 marathon's, and a few others I have not committed fully to yet.

Today was a two a day work out. I felt guilty about taking the last couple day off from running so I logged 4 miles at lunch.

and 9.1 miles of hills tonight with Laura on the North slope of Queen Anne hill.

Generally a group of us have been doing longer runs on Saturday mornings, hills one night during the week, and solo runs on other days.

The charts linked into this page were created using the Nike + Ipod nano system. Cool stuff IMHO.
